Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as a little girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware through her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her life, but spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. When she was studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
