Padma Lakshmi Bio
Padma Parvati Lakshmi was born on September 1, 1970 in Chennai, India. Her parents divorced after she turned 2 years old. To escape the stigma of Indian divorce, her mother moved to the United States. Lakshmi spent two years living with her maternal grandparents in Chennai before moving to the United States. Her parents later remarried, and she has a younger half-brother and half-sister on her father's side. Lakshmi, who shares her last name with the Hindu goddess of prosperity and wealth, grew up first in New York and then in Los Angeles with her mother and stepfather. She visited her family in India several times a year, and then returned for a few months. Padma Lakshmi became interested in acting in 1999.
